What Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV Streaming?

Your internet connection has the biggest effect on how smooth streaming feels. The good news: you don't need the fastest plan available — you need a connection that is stable and has enough headroom for everyone in your home.

General speed guidelines

As a general rule of thumb for a single stream, per device:

• HD (720p): around 5 Mbps
• Full HD (1080p): around 10 Mbps
• 4K (2160p): around 25 Mbps

If you use more than one connection at the same time, add the numbers together. Two Full HD streams, for example, need roughly 20 Mbps — plus whatever else your household is doing online.

How to test your connection

1. Run a speed test on the device you watch on, not on a different device.
2. Test at the time of day you usually watch — evening speeds are often lower.
3. Run the test two or three times and look at the lowest result, not the highest.

How to improve a slow or unstable connection

• Use a wired Ethernet connection wherever possible.
• Move your router to a central, open spot — away from walls, microwaves and metal objects.
• Connect to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band if your router and device support it.
• Pause large downloads and game updates while you watch.
• Restart your router regularly.
