M3U vs Xtream Codes: What's the Difference and Which Should You Use?

M3U vs Xtream Codes explained simply: how each IPTV login works, which gives a better TV guide and VOD, and how to get Xtream details from an M3U link.

When you set up an IPTV app, it usually asks whether you want to use an M3U playlist or an Xtream Codes login. Both give you the same service — but they work differently, and one usually gives a better experience. Here's M3U vs Xtream Codes in plain English.

What Is an M3U Playlist?

An M3U playlist is a list of channel addresses, delivered as one long web link (URL). Your app downloads the list and shows the channels. It's the oldest and most widely supported format — almost every player can open one, including VLC (see how to watch IPTV on VLC).

A typical M3U link looks like this: http://server.example:8080/get.php?username=YOURNAME&password=YOURPASS&type=m3u_plus&output=ts

What Is an Xtream Codes Login?

An Xtream Codes login (often shown as Xtream Codes API in apps) uses three separate details: a server URL, a username and a password. Instead of downloading one big list, the app talks to the server and requests live TV, movies, series and the TV guide in separate, organized sections.

Which Should You Use?

In the M3U vs Xtream Codes choice, use Xtream Codes whenever your app supports it. You'll get a cleaner layout, a working TV guide and proper movie and series sections. Use M3U when your app only accepts a playlist link — for example, VLC on a computer. Many apps accept both, so you can always try Xtream Codes first and fall back to M3U if needed.

If you only have an M3U link, you can usually read the Xtream details straight out of it:

  1. Server URL: everything before /get.php — for example, http://server.example:8080.
  2. Username: the text after username= and before the next &.
  3. Password: the text after password= and before the next &.

With an M3U playlist, the TV guide often comes as a separate EPG link (usually ending in xmltv.php or .xml). If your app has a field for an EPG or XMLTV URL, paste it there. With Xtream Codes, apps normally find the guide on their own, which is one more reason to prefer it.

Common M3U and Xtream Codes Mistakes

  • Missing `http://` at the start of the server URL.
  • Leaving off the port number, such as :8080.
  • Pasting a space at the end of the username or password.
  • Adding `/get.php` to the Xtream server URL — it should end at the port.
  • Entering the same login on too many devices at once, which triggers connection limits.

Using Each Format with Aero IPTV

Your Aero IPTV setup message includes the details you need for your app. For step-by-step instructions, follow the IPTV Smarters Pro setup guide or the TiviMate setup guide, which both use Xtream Codes, or pick your device from our setup guides. If the TV guide doesn't load, see what an EPG is and how to fix it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Xtream Codes better than M3U?

Usually, yes. Xtream Codes loads live TV, movies, series and the TV guide in organized sections, while M3U is a single list that often needs a separate TV guide link.

Can I convert an M3U link to Xtream Codes?

Yes. The server URL is everything before /get.php, and the username and password appear after username= and password= in the link.

Which apps only support M3U?

General media players such as VLC only open M3U playlists. Most dedicated IPTV players, like IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate, support both formats.

Is my M3U link private?

Yes. It contains your username and password, so keep it private and never share it publicly.

What is the EPG link in an M3U playlist?

It's a separate web address for the TV guide, often ending in xmltv.php or .xml. Paste it into your app's EPG or XMLTV field if the guide doesn't load by itself.
