How to Use the Downloader App on Fire TV Stick (2026 Guide)
How to install and use the Downloader app on Fire TV Stick, turn on Install Unknown Apps, and which new Vega OS Fire TV models no longer support it.

The Downloader app on Fire TV is a free tool that lets you install apps that aren't in the Amazon Appstore by typing a web address or a short code. It's how many people install IPTV player apps on a Fire TV Stick. This guide shows you how to set it up safely — and explains the big 2026 change: the newest Fire TV Sticks don't support it at all.
First, Check Whether Your Fire TV Supports the Downloader App
Amazon has started moving Fire TV devices from Fire OS (based on Android) to Vega OS, a new Linux-based system. Vega OS devices, starting with the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, can only install apps from the Amazon Appstore. Sideloading — installing apps from outside the store — isn't possible, with Downloader or any other method.
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and check your model name and software.
- If your device runs Fire OS, you can use the Downloader app on Fire TV as described below.
- If it runs Vega OS, use a player app from the Appstore instead — or message us and we'll recommend one that's available on your model.
Step 1: Install the Downloader App on Fire TV
- From the Fire TV home screen, select Find, then Search.
- Type Downloader and select the app published by AFTVnews.
- Select Get or Download, then Open.
- Allow the app to access files if asked.
Step 2: Turn On Install Unknown Apps
Fire OS blocks apps from outside the Appstore by default. You need to allow the Downloader app specifically:
- Go to Settings → My Fire TV.
- If you don't see Developer Options, open About, highlight your device name and press Select seven times. A message confirms you're now a developer.
- Go back to My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install Unknown Apps.
- Find Downloader and switch it ON.
Step 3: Download an App with Downloader
- Open Downloader. In the Home tab, select the address box.
- Type the web address or Downloader code of the app you want, then select Go.
- When the download finishes, select Install, then Open or Done.
- Go back to Downloader and delete the installation file to save storage space.
Staying Safe When You Sideload
- Only enter addresses from the official website of the app's developer.
- Be wary of codes shared in comments or forums — anyone can publish a Downloader code.
- Avoid "all-in-one" apps that promise free premium channels. They are usually unlicensed and sometimes contain malware.
- Keep your Fire TV updated in Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for Updates.
Troubleshooting the Downloader App on Fire TV
- "App not installed" error: your storage may be full. Uninstall apps you don't use and delete old files in Downloader's Files tab.
- Install button does nothing: check that Install Unknown Apps is switched on for Downloader — Fire OS updates sometimes switch it off.
- Download stops partway: restart the Fire TV and your router, then try again.
- Developer Options disappeared after an update: repeat the seven-click trick in About.
